The clinical significance of such a commonplace symptom as hoarseness is very frequently underestimated , firstly and chiefly, owing to the fact that hoarseness so commonly accompanies transient catarrhal affections of the throat and chest that neither doctor nor patient regards it as otherwise than a temporary inconvenience ; and secondly, because when the graver causes of hoarseness have been recognised it becomes a very trivial complaint compared with the serious issues at stake.
